The Voyeurs is a performance installation, an invisible performance centered around a phone conversation between friends, both black. Their conversation and curiosity serve as a channel of discourse encompassing issues of race, gender, desire and current questions of identity.
A private encounter set in a public space, the audience eavesdrops on the conversation creating another layer of voyeurism, implicating the audience within the performance.
Creating layers of seeing and being seen, echoing our world which is constantly under surveillance. The voyeuristic nature of the performance creates a space of reflection, observation, and imagination.
The Voyeurs is part of a series of performance installation entitled he his own mythical beast, which explores ideas of identity, appropriation, race, gender and power dynamics in American culture. Prior installments in the series include: Love Me, Venus Revisited, The Venus Knot, see yourself when and Chimera.
