Barnard’s Marjorie Folkman ’91 moderates a discussion with choreographers/directors Martha Clarke, Adrienne Truscott, and Mariangela Lopez on the naked body in contemporary dance and theatrical performance, and its role as a site of meaning, activism, advocacy, agency, and art. What are the negotiations in crafting nakedness as a choreographer? What challenges and opportunities does the unclothed body in performance present to the art maker, performer, or viewer? By examining these creators’ groundbreaking works, involving the nude performing body, the panel and audience explore what vital understandings are embodied in this traditional and radical theatrical practice.
